Vision Tulsa Survey ResultsSome Background Information

In early March, Smart Growth Tulsa offered Tulsans a Vision Tulsa Survey, to provide an opportunity for respondents to experience what it feels like to make Vision Tulsa ballot choices, BEFORE actually entering the voting booth. We are now pleased to share with you the results of our efforts.

The final sample size was 382. A few of those had one or more missing responses to questions and were included with the “Don’t Know” responses in the final tabulations.

Smart Growth Tulsa sought to achieve as representative of a sample as possible without the resources for a more scientific approach. When we observed that the early results were “top-heavy” in responses from midtown and South Tulsa, we made extra efforts to market the survey to North Tulsa and East Tulsa but frankly, those efforts to engage people in those sectors were not a successful as we had hoped.

The Survey Basics

The survey asked respondents to provide information in three areas. The first section included basic demographic information. The second section asked for respondents to indicate the degree to which they approved each of the individual Vision 2025 projects included. Response options were Strongly Disapprove, Disapprove, Approve, and Strongly Approve. If a respondent was not sure how they felt about a project, a Don’t Know option was also available. For the analyses presented here, the Strongly Disapprove and Disapprove categories were combined as were the Approve and Strongly Approve categories. This provided a simple “up or down” look at the survey’s results. In the final section, respondents indicated whether they would vote for or against the three propositions on April 5th.

Some Demographic Breakdowns

The sample was virtually equally represented by men (50.7%) and women (49.3%). Respondents were largely Caucasian (86.1%), followed by Native American (4.7%) and African American (3.7%). The remaining 5.5% identified as Hispanic, Asian, or Two or More. The median age of the respondents was 43 years.

95.5% of the respondents are registered to vote. Of the 41 ZIP codes listed by the respondents, almost 78% of the respondents’ home addresses came from 12 ZIP codes; 74105 (13.4%), 74114 (10.2%), 74104 (7.6%), 74135 (7.1%), 74137 (7.1%), 74106 (5.2%), 74107 (5.2%), 74133 (4.7%), 74119 (4.5%), 74136 (4.5%), 74112 (4.2%), and 74127 (4.2%). Those ZIP codes fall mainly in Midtown or South Tulsa, then near north Tulsa or west across the Arkansas river south of Downtown.

For comparison purposes, 52% of the Tulsa population is female and 48% male, similar to the breakdown in the current sample. In marked contrast to the current sample, 66% of Tulsans are Caucasian, 15% African American, and 15% Hispanic. The median age is 35 years. As one would suspect, Midtown and South Tulsans are overrepresented compared to Tulsa’s general geographic dispersion.

Some elements were strongly supported, others…not so much

The five Economic Development projects with the highest approval proportions (Combined Strongly Approve/Approve) were:

  1. Expand Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness
  2. Street Maintenance and Traffic Improvements
  3. GO Plan for Cycling and Walking
  4. Rehabilitate Levees and Bank Stabilization
  5. Transit Operations and Capital

The five lowest approval proportions were:

  1. BMX National Headquarters
  2. Create Vensel Creek Park and Boat Dock
  3. Non-Public Safety Capital Equipment
  4. South Mingo Road Corridor
  5. Langston University Expansion

In all cases, respondents chose to Strongly Approve or Approve the projects. Furthermore, when asked how they would vote, the survey respondents approved all three propositions, ranging from 58.2% support for Proposition 1 to 78.0% for Proposition 2.
